A river full of hippos looks sociable. Dozens of animals pressed together in the water, touching, grunting, occasionally grooming each other — it seems like a tightly bonded community. The reality is more complicated, and more interesting. Hippos are not particularly social animals by the standards of mammals that live in groups. They tolerate each other in water because the water is where they need to be — not because they actively seek each other’s company. Understanding this distinction is the key to understanding how hippo groups actually work.
The Pod: What a Hippo Group Looks Like
A group of hippos is called a pod, though you may also see the terms bloat, herd, or school used. Most pods consist of 10 to 30 individuals, though in areas with abundant permanent water — like Zambia’s Luangwa Valley or Uganda’s Kazinga Channel — aggregations of 150 or more hippos have been recorded in a single stretch of river.
A typical pod contains:
- One dominant male who controls the water territory
- Multiple females and their young offspring
- Subadult females who have not yet reproduced
- Occasionally young males who have not yet been driven out
The pod is not a family unit in the way that a wolf pack or an elephant herd is. The hippos in a pod do not cooperate to find food, protect territory, or raise young in any coordinated way. What holds them together is shared access to the same stretch of water — which the dominant male controls and defends.

The Dominant Male and His Territory
The social structure of a hippo pod is built entirely around one animal: the dominant bull. He claims a stretch of river or lakeshore — typically between 50 and 500 metres in length — and defends it aggressively against rival males. His control of this territory gives him exclusive breeding rights with the females within it.
Dominant bulls mark their territory continuously. The characteristic tail-spinning defecation — in which the hippo rapidly spins its short tail while defecating, scattering dung across the widest possible area — is a territorial signal directed at other males. The same behaviour occurs at the water’s edge and along established land paths.
A dominant bull’s tenure is never permanent. As he ages, younger and larger bulls challenge him. These challenges involve some of the most dramatic and physically destructive encounters in the animal kingdom — two massive animals opening their jaws to full gape, clashing tusks, and inflicting deep wounds with canine teeth that can reach 50 cm in length. The loser either retreats to the margins of the pod as a subordinate or is driven out entirely.

Females and Calves
Female hippos within a dominant male’s territory are not “owned” by him in any strict sense — they move relatively freely and may shift between adjacent territories over time. What keeps them in a given area is access to the water and grazing land rather than any bond with the dominant male specifically.
Female hippos give birth to a single calf and maintain an extremely close bond with it for the first years of life. Newborn calves stay in shallow water near their mothers and are protected with extraordinary ferocity. A female hippo with a newborn is among the most dangerous animals in Africa.
As calves grow older, they often spend time in informal nursery groups — loose aggregations of young hippos watched over by one or more adult females while other mothers are feeding or resting. These nursery groups are where young hippos develop the social behaviours they will need as adults, including the play-fighting that prepares males for the territorial combat of adulthood.

Bachelor Males
Male hippos that have been displaced from a dominant male’s territory — or have not yet established their own — form loose bachelor groups on the periphery of established pods, or in less desirable stretches of water.
Bachelor groups are internally structured by size and age, with larger males having priority access to the better spots. Young bachelor males practise the fighting behaviours they will eventually use to challenge dominant bulls, without the stakes being as high as in a real territorial confrontation.
The period between leaving a pod as a young male and establishing a territory as a dominant male can last many years. Some males spend their entire lives as bachelors, never successfully challenging a dominant bull.
How Hippos Communicate
Hippos are vocal animals with a complex repertoire of sounds — but this communication has nothing to do with echolocation (a navigational system used by bats and dolphins that hippos do not possess).
What makes hippo communication genuinely unusual is something different: they are the only known mammal capable of amphibious vocalisation — producing sounds simultaneously above and below the water surface. When a hippo calls from the water, the sound propagates both through the air and through the water at the same time, allowing it to reach other hippos regardless of whether they are submerged or at the surface.
Their main vocalisations include:
- The wheeze-honk — the most distinctive hippo sound, a loud exhalation followed by a deep resonant honk, used to signal location and assert presence
- Grunts and growls — used in close-range social interactions
- Bellows — associated with territorial challenges between males
- High-pitched squeaks — produced by calves communicating with their mothers

Water vs Land: Two Different Hippos
One of the most important — and least understood — aspects of hippo social behaviour is how dramatically it changes between water and land.
In water, territorial rules are strictly enforced. The dominant male patrols his stretch, confronts intruding males, and maintains a clear hierarchy. Females with young are given space. Tension is ever-present, and disputes break out regularly.
On land — during the nightly grazing period — the same territorial rules largely dissolve. Hippos that would never be tolerated in a dominant male’s water territory may graze peacefully on the same floodplain. The land is neutral ground, and the energy required to enforce territorial dominance over an area of grassland is simply not worth the investment for an animal whose real interests lie in controlling water access.
This behavioural shift is one reason hippos on land at night can seem surprisingly calm compared to their behaviour in water.
